Zidell begins $20 million waterfront cleanup

ZRZ Realty company has launched the first phase of its $20 million cleanup of contaminated soil at its South Waterfront Property. ZRZ, also known as Zidell, owns a 30-acre parcel on the west side of the Willamette River, between the Marquam and Ross Island bridges. The land has been used continuously for industrial purposes — including ship building and dismantling — for nearly 100 years.

The first phase runs from August to mid-October and includes the removal of approximately 5,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Other soil will be excavated and contained before being reused under the Portland Milwaukie Light Rail Line, which will eventually separate the Zidell property from the Portland Aerial Tram site at Oregon Health and Science University’s South waterfront campus.

Zidell entered Oregon’s Voluntary Cleanup Program in 1994 and has spent 15 years studying site contamination and the river.

3 Kings Environmental of Battle Ground, Wash. will direct the project. Andersen Construction Co. is managing the cleanup.
