Green Grid introduces data center metrics

The Green Grid, a Portland-based consortium of technology companies bent on making data centers more energy efficient, announced Thursday the launch of two new metrics to measure the effectiveness of carbon and water use.

The new metrics, called Carbon Usage Effectiveness a yet-to-be-released Water Usage Effectiveness, are joining The Green Grid's Power Usage Effectiveness measure which was released in 2007. The PUE has become a widely used industry standard to measure just how efficiently a data center is running, including how much of its power its actually using to run computer equipment compared to how much power is used to cool the facility.

The carbon metric will help data-center managers better understand and measure greenhouse gas emissions generated by their facilities. The water metric will do the same for water use.

Data center efficiency is a hot topic among technology companies, with giants such as Google trying to increase their data centers' performance.

Google is among the members of the Green Grid consortium, a list that also includes Intel, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Hewlett-Packard and others.
