ClearEdge lands $1M from SoCal Gas

Southern California Gas Co. announced Thursday it invested $1 million in fuel cell company ClearEdge Power.

The investment is a natural as the proliferation of fuel cells will increase the demand for natural gas, which fuel cells use to generate electricity.

Hillsboro-based ClearEdge Power had a $10 million investment in October, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. That followed a $15 million investment announced a year ago.

Officials report that SoCalGas has a long history with fuel cells, from funding research and demonstrations of fuel cells starting in the 1970s to co-founding the National Fuel Cell Research Center at UC Irvine.

ClearEdge's combined heat and power fuel cell, the ClearEdge5, reduces carbon emissions by one-third and other typical pollutants to trace levels, according to ClearEdge Power officials.
