Fred Meyer will install six additional DC Fast chargers from ECOtality at stores near I-5 and Highway 26.
On the heels of the unveiling of Oregon's section of the Electric Highway project, Fred Meyer announced last week it would add electric vehicle charging stations to parking lots at stores along the same stretch of Interstate 5.
Working with ECOtality Inc., Fred Meyer will install Blink charging stations at nine Fred Meyer locations, most of them near I-5, by the end of summer 2012.
Officials at the company said one Level 2 charging station, which takes several hours to deliver a full charge, and one DC Fast Charger, which can give a full charge in less than 30 minutes, will be installed at stores in East Salem, Tualatin, Tigard, Sunset, Sandy and Salmon Creek locations. Two Level 2 chargers will be installed at Oregon City, Mill Plain and Gateway stores.
ECOtality and Fred Meyer have been working together on charging station installation since last summer. The Fred Meyer in Portland's Hollywood neighborhood hosted the first DC Fast Charger installed by ECOtality in Oregon.
To date, Fred Meyer stores have 27 Level 2 chargers and just the one DC Fast Charger available across 14 locations.
"Fred Meyer is an organization that understands the true value of charge infrastructure, and is helping to pioneer the EV space," said Jonathan Read, CEO of ECOtality Inc., said in a press release.
ECOtality competitor Aerovironment installed the EV chargers for the formal Electric Highway project through a contract with the Oregon Department of Transportation.
