Car2Go will add 30 electric vehicles to its Portland fleet starting this week.
Reporting on its first 100 days of operation in Portland, the Car2Go car-sharing service announced Tuesday it will add 30 Smart Fortwo electric vehicles to its local network and expand its service area in the city.
Car2Go North America LLC, owned by Daimler North America Corporation, launched its Portland point-to-point car-sharing service in late March. The company boasts 6,000 members signed on for the service in its first 100 days.
Collectively Portland members use the Car2Go service more than 4,500 times a week, the average distance driven in a Car2Go vehicle is between three and six miles, and a typical trip lasts from 30 to 45 minutes. Unlike many car-sharing services, Car2Go offers pay-by-the-minute pricing. The service is point-to-point meaning that cars are simply left in neighborhood parking spots and located by the next customer via a smart phone app.
This week, Car2Go will add 30 electric vehicles to its fleet, joining the 250 blue and white gas-powered Smart cars have been on the streets since the service launched.
“We knew Car2Go’s collaborative model would be a natural fit for Portland,” said Nicholas Cole, president and CEO of Car2Go, in a press release. “The people of Portland have embraced Car2Go’s on-demand model of car sharing, and adding electric cars to our network will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for Portland to maintain its title as one of the greenest cities in the world.”
In addition, Car2Go is expanding its "home area," the parts of the city where members can start and end their rentals. The new service area will cover 37 square miles, adding territory to the north including Swan Island and North Lombard Street, to the west to Northwest 23rd Avenue, and to the east around Gateway Transit Center.
