Car2Go members in Portland will be able to access the car-sharing service in other U.S. cities.
Car2Go, a car-sharing service that has dotted Portland streets with its distinctive white and blue Smart cars, announced Thursday it would allow its members multi-city access to cars within the United States.
Car2Go, a subsidiary of Daimler North America Corp., launched its point-to-point car-sharing service Portland this spring. Now members of the service can also access Car2Go cars in Austin, Texas; San Diego and Washington D.C. The company will add service in Miami later this month.
In all, U.S. members will have access to 1,300 cars. Of those, 300, based in San Diego, are all-electric smart cars. Car2Go members visiting other participating cities will have access to the Car2Go cars.
Members use a mobile software application to locate a convenient car and pay by the minute while they use it. The cars can be parked anywhere once they're no longer needed.
Car2Go members in Canada — the service is offered in Vancouver, British Columbia and Toronto, with Calgary, Alberta coming later this summer — can also access cars in other Canadian cities.
Katie Stafford, spokeswoman for Car2Go, said there are some technical adjustments that need to be made by the company can offer members access to all North American cities.
Car2Go officials say the company has 50,000 members, but the company won't yet report Portland numbers.
Stafford said, "We have had a great success in Portland."
