Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley is the third greenest politician in the country according to a new ranking.
Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley was named the third greenest legislator for his voting record, the support he gets from green-leaning organization and his work on alternative energy and energy efficiency.
In a ranking by the Daily Beast, the country's top 20 green lawmakers were highlighted. The greenest politician, according to their research, is Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, followed by Rep. Rush Holt, a Democrat from New Jersey.
Daily Beast staffers based their ranking on a collection of data including each legislator's voting record as compiled by the League of Conservation Voters, surveyed where their campaign support was coming from — checking mining, oil and gas donors against environmental and alternative energy support — and checking membership in green-related caucuses.
Merkley, the only Oregon lawmaker to make the list, is a member of the House and Senate Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency caucuses.
Two green Oregon politicians absent from the ranking:
- Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, also a Democrat, works closely with Merkley on many green-related issues including the call for tariffs on Chinese solar panels and the extension of the Production Tax Credit.
- Rep. Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat from Portland, is a well-known supporter of policies to support bicycles and alternative transportation in addition to alternative energy.
