Portland-based Keen opened its new retail store on Dec. 12, 2012 at 12:12 in the afternoon. Click through the gallery to see the clever ways Keen makes use of upcycling.
Even the "ribbon" for the official ribbon-cutting tied together remnants from the company's line of canvas bags.
Keen opened its newly expanded retail location, the Keen Garage, in Portland Wednesday, rolling up the doors at 505 N.W. 13th Ave. precisely at 12:12 in the afternoon on 12/12/12.

The store — and the company headquarters that rise for four floors above it — is a love letter to creative reuse. Everything from the carefully restored original pine floors to the display tables made from a torn-down bowling lane has a story behind it. Repurposed grocery bags become wall paper, oil barrels become lounge chairs and a barn door from eastern Oregon takes on a new identity emblazoned with the Portland shoe company's brand.
Christa DaPoe, vice president of global and online retail for Keen, gave members of the media a preview of the store and explained the significance of the 12/12/12 opening date.
"If you look at it, it's one, two, one, two, one, two," DaPoe said. "You only get one chance for a second chance. Everything in this store is repurposed."
Keen's adjacent headquarters also embrace the reuse ethic. The Pearl District building, purchased by Keen in February, was famously remodeled by only sending one dumpster to the landfill. Meanwhile tons of wood, drywall and metal were recycled and truckloads of other materials were reused with the assistance of the ReBuilding Center and Habitat for Humanity.
