SolarWorld's layoffs will affect 100 workers in Hillsboro.
SolarWorld Industries America Inc. announced Monday morning it’s laying off 100 workers from its Hillsboro facility.
The company said the layoff is expected to be permanent. The move involves no “bumping,” or the ability to assume other positions within SolarWorld, because the workers aren’t members of a collective bargaining unit.
The layoffs are expected to take place on or around Aug. 31. SolarWorld employs 700 workers in Hillsboro.
SolarWorld had revealed last month it reached a deal with Qatar Solar Technologies, a Qatari business partner, to put about $50 million into the company.
The company has struggled with competitive pressures from Chinese manufacturers who, according to SolarWorld, are flooding American markets with cheap panels.
SolarWorld had said big losses recorded before the Qatari deal weren't expected to affect its Hillsboro operations.
SolarWorld officials couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. This story will be updated throughout the day.
