Google adds bike directions (San Francisco)
Search and advertising giant Google Inc. added bicycling directions to its maps service.
The Mountain View company (NASDAQ: GOOG) has its “biking directions team” in Seattle, and Shannon Guymon, who works there, wrote a post on Google’s blog Wednesday explaining the new features.
“Today we’ve added biking directions and extensive bike trail data to Google Maps for the U.S.,” Guymon wrote.
People can choose “bicycling” on a drop down tab when seeking directions on a map. (Other choices include “by car,” “by public transit” and “walking.”) They’ll get a list of directions as well as a route on a map that avoids hills when possible and does its best to keep a rider on bike-friendly roads.
